Nick Goodwin QC was instructed by the Attorney General to act as amicus curiae in the Court of Appeal in Her Majesty's Attorney General v Akhter & Anor [2020] EWCA Civ 122

The case related to the availability of nullity under s11 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 to an Islamic marriage on the application of human rights principles. The Court of Appeal concluded that the judge’s order must be set aside as there was, in this case, no ceremony in respect of which a decree of nullity could be granted pursuant to the provisions of s. 11 of the 1973 Act.
