Harcourt Chambers has a strong tradition of recruiting Junior Tenants from its pupils. In general, it is our view that this is the most efficient and effective form of recruitment. We are not a “pupil factory”: we take our responsibilities towards pupils very seriously. Pupillage is a critical stage in any career at the Bar.

We recruit a minimum of one and up to two pupils per year through the Bar Council’s Pupillage Gateway scheme. At the time of writing, the pupillage award for each successful applicant stands at a total of £32,000, payable as an award in the First Six of £16,000 and as guaranteed receipts of £16,000 during the Second Six. Pupils may have up to three supervisors, each tailored to the individual pupil’s interests in so far as that is possible. At least one period of pupillage (generally four months) will be undertaken with a supervisor based in our Oxford premises. The content of pupillage is predominantly family work, although pupils can also expect to see other general civil work during their time with us. There are excellent opportunities for work during the Second Six, and that work, whilst including a significant amount of family work, is likely to be varied.

Student visits are not available.

Mini Pupillage

Harcourt Chambers welcomes applications for mini pupillage from candidates who have a strong interest in family law and from candidates who may be interested in applying to Harcourt Chambers for pupillage.

Interested applicants should send their completed mini pupillage application form by email to Emma Gatland. Applications are usually only accepted from candidates who are in at least their second year of university education.

Applicants should note that members of Chambers do a lot of work on circuit and so they may have to travel to courts outside of London or Oxford in order to experience interesting cases.

The dates and deadlines for mini pupillage applications are as follows:

  1. Candidates who wish to do a mini pupillage between 1st January and 30th April should apply by 4.00 p.m. on 1st October.
  2. Candidates who wish to do a mini pupillage between 1st May and 31st August should apply by 4.00 p.m. 1st February;
  3. Candidates who wish to do a mini pupillage between 1st September and 31st December shall apply by 4.00 p.m. on 1st June.
