Harcourt Chambers has a strong tradition of recruiting Junior Tenants from its pupils. In general, it is our view that this is the most efficient and effective form of recruitment. We are not a “pupil factory”: we take our responsibilities towards pupils very seriously. Pupillage is a critical stage in any career at the Bar.

We recruit a minimum of one and up to two pupils per year through the Bar Council’s Pupillage Gateway scheme. At the time of writing, the pupillage award for each successful applicant stands at a total of £32,000, payable as an award in the First Six of £16,000 and as guaranteed receipts of £16,000 during the Second Six. Pupils may have up to three supervisors, each tailored to the individual pupil’s interests in so far as that is possible. At least one period of pupillage (generally four months) will be undertaken with a supervisor based in our Oxford premises. The content of pupillage is predominantly family work, although pupils can also expect to see other general civil work during their time with us. There are excellent opportunities for work during the Second Six, and that work, whilst including a significant amount of family work, is likely to be varied.

Student visits are not available.

Mini Pupillage

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 crisis, we are currently unable to offer any mini-pupillages in Chambers. Subject to any further updates (to be found on this page), the application process will re-open on 01 February 2021 for mini-pupillages between 01 May and 31 August 2021.
