James Dove spoke to the Milton Keynes Local Family Justice Board on 14 October 2026 about deprivation of liberty in children’s cases. The talk looked at what has changed since the Supreme Court overruled Cheshire West in June, and at the first children’s cases to apply the new approach. It worked through six situations that judges and practitioners meet in practice, from the child who now accepts her arrangements to the 17-year-old who refuses them, and ended with a short checklist for hearings and a look ahead to section 13 of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026.
