Barristers must complete specialist training in order to accept instructions on a direct access basis and Harcourt has a group of experienced barristers, who are all qualified under the public access rules. We aim to provide expert, cost-effective, advice and representation directly to members of the public in family and civil law. We regularly carry out work for members of the public directly under this scheme and are very experienced in this area. Direct access clients value our approachability, expertise and commitment. We carry out all of our work to the highest standards and if you instruct one of our barristers on a direct access basis you can expect an excellent service at all times.

The Bar Standards Board provides Public Access Guidance for Lay Clients which can be found here.

Some of the advantages of instructing a barrister under the public access scheme are:

  • Expertise: You engage directly with the barrister with the expertise you need;
  • Costs: You can save money by having one lawyer not two;
  • Consistency: You will have a barrister who is with you from the start, advising you on the law and strategy;
  • Security: You will know exactly how much each piece of work is going to cost in advance; and
  • Speed: You can get to the heart of the matter quickly.
