Emma Gatland and Alana Hughes in the Court of Appeal

26th Nov 2025 | Cases

This week Emma Gatland and Alana Hughes, instructed by HRS Family Law, have appeared in the Court of Appeal in a very significant case considering the statutory interpretation of ‘father’ under the Children Act 1989. Across three conjoined appeals, the court has considered, among other issues, whether a ‘father’ must be the genetic parent of a child in order to acquire parental responsibility.

The court has been asked to provide guidance on points arising in the appeal. Judgment is expected in early 2026.

Reported in Local Government Lawyer.
