Mavis-Amonoo-Acquah represented the applicant in securing a contested declaration of parentage before Mr Justice Poole in Re YZ (Declaration of Parentage: BATUK: DNA Evidence) [2026] EWHC 1601 (Fam). Mavis was instructed by James Netto along with Beatrice Holt of IFLG.
This case arose out of a larger piece of litigation involving 20 separate applicants, the wider case also involving Professor Rob George KC, Natasha Miller and Paige Campbell of Harcourt Chambers. The case generally has been the subject of extensive publicity, including a BBC Documentary and a 5-part podcast series. They all involve similar facts to Re YZ, of children conceived near the British Army base in Kenya known as BATUK, and where the fathers have then returned to the UK and not taken responsibility for the children left behind.
Poole J concluded his judgment by saying:
“This is but one of the cases generated by the efforts of Mr Netto and others to assist women and children in Kenya who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to prove paternity. This respondent has denied paternity but has been proved to be YZ’s father. It is not for me to comment on the other cases, but in this case the applicant has been very well served by those representing her, the expert evidence, and by all those who have worked on her behalf.”
