Nick Goodwin KC, instructed by Roland Robinsons & Fentons Solicitors, for the Third Respondent Child R, led Heather Hobson of Deans Court Chambers, in R (A Minor) (Fact Finding) [2025] EWHC 1977 (Fam); care proceedings, issued following concerns that R had suffered deliberate salt poisoning and had also sustained a shaking injury.
R was admitted to hospital in June 2024 presenting with diarrhoea and vomiting. R’s blood revealed high levels of sodium (severe hypernatremia) which continued to climb even after the commencement of treatment. Evidence from medical experts concluded that R had been subjected to salt poisoning, deliberately administered by his mother, as well as a non‑accidental shaking injury.
At the time of the poisoning R was living within his British‑Pakistani extended family. The court ordered that R be placed in a foster home under a kinship placement model and that contact with parents be limited to six times a year.
